Summary

Jake Paul defeated 58-year-old Mike Tyson in an eight-round boxing match, with unanimous scores of 79-73 and 80-72.

The bout, widely criticized as a “stunted show,” highlighted Tyson’s physical decline, including issues with sciatica, a stomach ulcer, and knee problems.

Tyson, once a feared heavyweight champion, struggled to compete, while Paul’s performance lacked effort and authenticity.

Fans, initially supportive of Tyson, grew disenchanted, booing by the final rounds.

Tyson dismissed the fight’s significance beforehand, rejecting the concept of legacy as meaningless. The event was seen as a cynical, contrived spectacle.

Please forget that I raped that woman as I collect my millions…

EDIT: People so in-love with the persona or work of Tyson that they’ll disregard the unforgivable. That he still denies to this day, even with the evidence. That says more about you than it does this rich celebrity…

You’re not listening. He refused to apologize for what he did! Rape, like murder, is not just a momentary lapse in judgement/morals, it’s taking everything from someone or scarring them for life. But yes, I believe in redemption. So the moment Tyson acknowledges his violent crime, apologizes for it, and and pays reparations, I’ll shut the fuck up about it.

Until then, you (and people who pretend the past didn’t happen) are in the wrong for victim-blaming just because he’s popular. I’ll take all the downvotes forever due to this view…

Nah they probably sat together and said… we can make bank… let’s do this and give people a good show… And then they did the whole shebang and gave people a nice performance that cost next to nothing to produce and pocketed the rest. Pretty clever.

Jake Paul knows some people pay to see Tyson beat the anot out of him, others hate watch him and he has fans apparently.

There are quite a lot of us morons in the world. So many, in fact, that Netflix struggled to stream it to all of us. Clever or not, everyone involved got what they wanted.

It definitely helped that it was on Netflix. That was the difference, at least for me. There is absolutely no way in hell I would’ve paid for a PPV of that, but given that my wife already has Netflix, it was more of an “eh, why not” type of thing.

Taylor vs Serrano was 100% worth it, that was rad.

The match was close despite the age difference and also the difference in the level of class both before and after the fight was staggering.

Jake Paul made a fool of himself.

I don’t know if you watch boxing regularly or not, but that match wasn’t close. Tyson won the first 2 rounds because he had enough energy to land a couple of good shots due to experience, but when he ran out of steam Jake just toyed with him until it went 8. Jake could have absolutely gotten a few knockdowns, but chose not to.

I say that having absolutely zero respect for the Paul brothers. They’re both class A douchebags. Logan more than Paul in my opinion because of the suicide forest incident, but Jake won this fight unanimously and relatively easily.

The suicide forest didn’t bother me as much as half the other shit Logan did… I think what did it for me was buying a Gameboy Color for a street vendor, smashing it on camera, and then yelled at the vendor to get his money back in broken spanish because it was “Mucho Brokeno” as he put it…

Sets an example for others, especially the younger generation. Reinforces that living up to a principle can benefit everyone. Puts ethics above selfishness, greed, hate.

Humans change their behavior based on what they see other humans doing. A person seeing most people or people of influence acting primarily in self-interest makes them that person more likely to do the same.

And, no, Libertarians, everyone acting in self-interest does not lead to better outcomes. That’s a childless myth.

Yeah the most upsetting part is that a soulless cash grab between a historically great athlete that could’ve not gotten involved and a hack influencer with a strong following of youths happened at all. It’s teaching young minds that money means everything and tricks them into thinking any part of this fight was fair or real. It makes boxing look bad, especially after watching a very legitimate and hard fought match minutes earlier. Jake needs to fight someone who’s a real competitor. No more retirees, basketball players, etc. If this was two old guys boxing then it would have felt very different to me. The match sucked and the viewer was the biggest loser throughout all of it.

You just reminded me of an awful joke my mom made many times about partying like it’s 1999 which I’m sure you’re referencing. Many times I asked her what our plans were and she would start singing that line in cringier and cringier ways that I groaned more and more as a kid, teenager, and adult. She passed unexpectedly a few years back.

All that to say, thanks for the rare reference I haven’t heard since, and I internally groaned again. I hope you have people to groan about it like I do you cheeky devil.

Skilled athletes are entertaining to watch. Guys that know how fight and do it well, at least. It can be a highly technical, highly skilled competition. Some people are just there to watch two adults beat the piss out of each other. Which, to be fair, is how the sport started.

Back in the 70s and early 80s boxing was incredible. Ali was still a contender and Spinx, Fraser, Sugar Ray, Marvelous Marvin, Holmes and Durán lit up their weight classes like a Christmas tree.

Then Tyson entered the sphere and blew the doors off. He was fucking amazing to watch back then. His precision and power were something we’d never seen before and we were in awe.

Pre-Dana White commercialized ufc was crazy to watch. The same octagon, but with almost no rules meant busted arms, legs, etc.

I remember the first time I saw it (on video, pre-streaming days) and it was far more gruesome than boxing ever was.

I think you’re right that UFC ruined boxing.

Nah, boxing ruined boxing with their ass-backwards scoring and match decision-making. Look at Mayweather vs Pacquiao, or even Taylor vs Serrano, where that latter clearly had the upper hand in their respective fights, but the decision went to the formers on technicalities and judging particulars. It’s disenchanting to many spectators to see a fight where, betting aside, the majority of people view the fight as going one direction while a small minority place the outcome differently.

(note - I’m a relative noob for boxing. I attend semi regular classes at a local gym but don’t tend to watch much at all)

Boxing requires a huge depth of skill and not a huge breadth. It’s one of those sports where the basics are 99% of the sport. Definitely makes it seem like 2 dudes just going at each other, but the amount of skill and raw stamina needed to be remotely competitive is insane. Even with gloves, those punches still hurt like a mother fucker and then you’re expected to not only keep going after receiving a few dozen, but expected to dish out your own

Sometimes a joke is just a joke. But you guys want to wave your moral superiority over me, that’s fine. Let me tell you declaring war on every little thing someone says gets tiring. Next time you watch a movie with a fat joke in it are you going to turn it off and write the director a letter?

Nah that neckbeard wanted to “I can’t even” boxing. They can take that somewhere else.

They should be allowed to state an opinion without being attacked. If you are so fragile you can’t tolerate the idea that there are people who aren’t into things you like, you aught to take THAT somewhere else.

Oh, I’m not an admin. I’m not removing his ability to say what he said. Likewise to the whole “people are entitled to their opinions” tripe; nobody is deleting opinions.

But I think you’re confused. I’m “attacking” someone being negative and shitting on boxing. They’re doing the “I don’t even get rap, country suckkksss” thing. You know, where you don’t like something other people like so you pretend it’s utterly bizarre and alien. Like what you’re describing. The behavior you think should be taken elsewhere.

It was awful for a long time, but honestly I’ve come to terms with it. I’m at a stable weight, I’m getting the nutrition I need, I’m working on a solution. It’s going to have to take a back seat since we’re emigrating soon, but it is what it is for now and I’m not dying.

It’s much more awful for my wife and daughter than it is for me to be honest.

Which rapist can haphazardly throw an occasional swing in the vague direction of their opponent, at least half the time at least being close enough to theoretically connect.

The main event really undercut the earlier fights.

Serrano vs Taylor was fucking amazing. Despite Taylor’s dirty moves, she couldn’t keep Serrano at bay for a single second. I can’t believe the judges robbed her of the win.

Serrano has earned my respect. I’m not a regular fan of the sport and this is the first time I’ve watched a fight in over 20 years. How she didn’t get the W is beyond me. Her trainer was dropping bombs in the post match interview though, I wouldn’t fuck with that dude.

I’d argue the 1st one was weak where the winner couldn’t even punch with his left hand. Just kinda swatted like a kitten. The title card just sucked so bad you might’ve lowered your standards to say it was amazing.

That fight was exceptional and the brow cut was so hard to watch. If the 3rd match wasn’t there the whole thing would’ve been a waste of time as a casual watcher. 2nd match was good but wouldn’t have pulled my attention by itself. 1st one seemed bush league.

I thought it was cute all the people saying Mike was going to murder him. As a 45 year old boxer I am pretty exhausted after 3 minutes. 5 rounds later and I’m ready for a nice cup of tea in an armchair sitting by the window. Time catches up to us all.

In this universe he is nearly 60 and his opponent was in his 20s. Don’t get me wrong, I still wouldn’t fight Tyson because I’m 40 and in, at best, mediocre shape but we can acknowledge that he is well past his prime.

From my perspective, he was being way too careful to avoid hurting himself. At 58 you’re not going to recover as well, and dude has a bad knee which is a major disadvantage in boxing.

Plus, after not really boxing for 20 years, it’s perfectly believable that he lost his edge.

Given that Mike just kinda stood and let Jake swing at him after two rounds of Mike trying to “make it look convincing”, yeah no, this was scripted as all hell.

I don’t think it was necessarily scripted, but it wasn’t raw boxing. Nor could it be, given the contenders. Once Tyson ran out of gas, any other boxer would’ve gone for the KO, while Paul just kinda danced around to drag out the latter rounds. It was clearly an exhibition to get them both paid, not a real match.

He fought a young competitive boxer once and lost so awfully he never tried again. His career is entirely based on beating up geriatric boxers. He is not out there boxing sub 16 kids because they won’t let him. He would definitely punch kids in the face if allowed to.

I actually saw this fight. I knew they’d rig it for Jake Paul just for the headline… but I was hoping they’d be less obvious about it.

Mike Tyson basically just stood there doing nothing while Jake Paul tried to hug him, and while doing this “hug it out” routine wore himself out in the process… Dude looked like he was melting into a puddle of sweat while Mike Tyson just kinda no-sold the farce.

I’m tired of the biggest douches in the world beating talented people in fixed fights…

I’m honestly surprised anyone thought it wouldn’t go this way.

Anyone who knows how big of a piece of shit Jake Paul is knew this was going to happen.

Jake Paul is a piece of shit and so is his brother Logan.

I’m glad no one got hurt. The other fights on the card were better. Main event was boring and predictable. Tyson was slow and off balance. Paul threw and landed 2x the punches Tyson did. Not a match that would convince a non fan that there is something more to the sport than punching.

I will admit, the whole “It’s no cancel culture, it’s consequence culture!” annoys me

When in reality, we let people learn from their mistakes and grow into better people.

Only a dumbass still thinks Dave Mustaine still gets into drunken fights with Metallica like he did 40+ years ago, but… if the internet had existed back then the Tumblr Twitter whoever Zeitgeist they’d still label him a monster, and be the only ones.

If the Rise and Return of Trump is any indicator, the internet is not indicative of real life.

No, lol. He was convicted and went to prison for it. That was the reason he served time.

In case you seriously don’t know, Tyson was convicted of rape back in 1992 and served 3? years.

It was at the height of his career and fame.

It was after he was released, when he was fighting for his titles back, that he bit Holyfields ear.

That era was really a downfall of boxing. MMA was gaining popularity and the early, post prison Tyson fights were little more than “show” fights with very poor matchups. This was also when people realized what a piece of shit Don King was.

I was talking about Paul anyway.
