Eh… I know this is a meme sub, but this undermines any arguments to be made about real problems with healthcare systems by just… not being accurate.
If you need stitches in the UK, that’s an A&E (ER for my North American friends) sort of ordeal, and yeah, you won’t be seen immediately because the system is badly managed and overwhelmed. You’ll have to wait several hours (unless you’re bleeding out/at risk of death, in which case you’ll be seen quickly), not 43 months ffs.
That said, anything that’s non-urgent can take a few months. The only exceptions to this are 1) mental health, where you’re looking at several months for the waitlist almost irrespective of severity, and 2) gender-affirming care, where you won’t be seen for well in excess of 5 years, which at this rate & in this political climate (TERF island), is likely to outlast the NHS gender clinics themselves. Private is still an option for both of these branches of healthcare, but it’s expensive for sure.
As the other commenter said, the ER wait at hospitals is still hours and hours for more “minor” emergency care. Stitches, etc.
And then we get a $43,000 bill.
I just want to put a note here that my deleted comment was about how fucked americas healthcare system is, but i felt it was too rambly and personal.
But basically what everyone else said, its propaganda that america doesn’t have all the exact same problems as countries that don’t bankrupt you. Wait times are absurd, wether ER, primary care, or specialists.
And frequently we don’t even bother seeking help because a combination of cost and how long it will take to even see someone.

Similar situation just about anywhere in the US as well. So many Americans buy into the myth that the high prices keep American healthcare fast and efficient, but in reality you’re still likely to run into the same problem of waiting half a day in the emergency department waiting room, difficulties finding a primary care provider taking new patients, and months or years-long waits to see a specialist.
That is really sad – the worst of both worlds. You guys deserves better.
saw a tumblr thread where there’s only 5 certified transmasc top surgeons so all the UK transmascs would gossip about where they got their top surgery done, and my question is: was that true? and if so, is it still the case?
I think it’s a little more than 5, but yeah, there are only a handful, maybe 10 or so. This is otherwise 100% true.
The moment I or any FTM friend of mine mention top surgery, the discussion immediately changes into which surgeon and why.
And the gossip travels far! I haven’t had surgery yet, but I have my surgeon picked out already, and so many trans guys without any firsthand experience feel the need to tell me that he is an asshole. (I do appreciate the heads up; it’s just that I kind of don’t care bc his results are awesome.)
aww I love that <3
Thanks for the answer, that’s really interesting!!
community says “post something before you leave”. i got the first meme in my gallery and posted it. i put 0 effort into this post.
i dont agree with the message i just thought people would find it funny considering its a meme sub as you said
That’s totally fair. I’ll leave my comment up just bc it’s informative
Honestly fair enough
Holy propaganda batman 😅
Propaganda for what? Super glue?
$200,000 for a very minor stroke. Yeah, I have considered just dying. Fuck you.
The bottom is more like “wait in the emergency for 8 hours”. Or sooner if it’s actually life-threatening.
Seems about right, but the NHS kinda has a list and if your case is more serious or Urgent then you get moved up the list. Either way you have to wait some time
look at the down votes you’re getting for sharing the same viewpoint that luigi holds and consider how wildly popular this sort of opinion is with both the left and the right.
social media is not immune from the same controlled-narratives/propaganda that the mainstream media is using to discredit luigi and the people who share is views and you’re seeing it in action on the “general purpose” instances on lemmy like this one.
This is not the “same viewpoint Luigi holds.” The Canadian and British examples are grossly exaggerated to the point of being a bad faith argument, which leads me to suspect the US one might be as well.
Lying about the problem doesn’t aid the cause; it harms it.
It’s inaccurate in relation to how much a 43 month waitlist problem would cost in the US. Unless you’re seeking care that has been politicized, the US costs should have a couple zeros added to be a comparable exaggeration. Costs in this country seem like they should be a joke, but shit is really that expensive.
i didnt make this meme
Not all Nazis worked at the death camps either, so it’s fine.
Comparing sharing a meme to being a Nazi is an egregious insult to the people who suffered under them
It’s definitely a very hyperbolic example.
But it holds nonetheless.
Doesn’t matter you didn’t make the meme, you served the same purpose as the one that did.
Exaggerating wait times in public healthcare is used as a way to convince USians that their system isn’t as bad compared to others, and that people definitely shouldn’t demand public healthcare in the US. But the fact is that in countries with public healthcare the life expectancy is higher, governments spend less money on healthcare and people are generally much more satisfied with their healthcare system. If waiting times are long it just means that there must be more funding to fix the bottleneck.
