sad sad mommy @noahsarca

i love the quebec pet allowances they are so silly it’s like a riddle

Number of pets allowed

Usual limits

A total of 8 pets are allowed (among the allowed species), including the maximum permissible for dogs and cats.

Up to 4 pets are allowed, including a maximum of 3 dogs.

Examples:

  • You can have 4 rabbits, 3 dogs and 1 cat.
  • You can’t have 4 frogs and 4 dogs.

Lol this helped me understand the text, thanks.
Does an aquarium of fish count as one pet, or does every individual fish count?

Not sure if cats + dogs ≤ 4 I read It as not dogs ≤ 4

I guess that your ruleset comes from the mention of including the maximum for cats and dogs and maybe those are the only ones that are called pets but 🤔

Yeah, I’m very confused by the “8 pets are allowed” and “4 pets are allowed”, it reads to me like “You can have 8 pets as long as you have at most 4 pets” which obviously makes no sense.

It’s just badly translated. In French it clearly says maximum of 4 cats and dogs, of which a maximum of 3 dogs.

My god, that’s so much less stupid!

"You can have up to 8 animals, all (something) authorized species. Fish do not count toward the 8 animal limit.

“Of those 8 animals, you can have up to 4 cats and dogs, with a maximum of 3 dogs.”

Both the English and French versions are on https://montreal.ca/en/topics/pet-license

So it’s a trick maths question that actually requires you to know French and have seen these rules in it, seems legit

I dunno, I hadn’t seen them, nor do I know french. The second “pets” covering cats and dogs was the only way I could see the statements didn’t contradict.

I’ve cross-bred eight different dogs with various species of fox, so they all count independently.

      Also, jesus christ the smell.

Foxes are “prominent poopers” and I have several areas in my (rural) yard where foxes proudly display their turds. Atop an 8x8 fence post, a raised cement culvert opening, a mound of loam I never got around to landscaping with. They are replaced every few days, I find myself noticing the seasonal diets of the local foxes. It’s lizards, small rodents and fruit for the most part. Very occasionally birds.

He pooped in my window well and it looked like he shat out 3 full mice, hopefully this doesn’t become a thing.

I get a lot of rabbits in my yard, and he’s been visiting for a while to hunt them without leaving poops like this.

(Edit: actually I think it’s a she, there’s a den about 200m from my house and she had two kits last year, if you went for a walk in the morning you would often see them chasing rabbits in and out of the tall grass)

          Is that possible?

No idea. I was just in it for a joke. I know folks who have foxes as pets, though, and they really produce a pungent effect.

But then you’d have 4 dogs, 3 wolves and a rooster, and that’s against the rules.

What you need is 2 huskies, a bloodhound, 2 wolves, a kakapo, a howler monkey, and a rooster. For best results, duct tape your kakapo to your monkey.

I have a friend with three kids. They had at one point 3 rabbits, 2 dogs and a cat. They don’t live on a farm, but they do have a large property (countryside).

When I was in college I had a classmate who was living with 5 roommates in a large house and had 8 cats amongst them. No idea if it was legal then or if the landlord even knew.

In Germany my colleague has to send a photo of his turtle every year to some gov/municipal agency, to track it’s growth and prove that is not an exotic/illegall type (which could only be seen when they get bigger)

Makes sense to limit how many you can have, so you can’t have ridiculous number of cats or dogs in a small space. But it gets complicated with smaller animals and since they all have different space requirements.

It’s like saying, if you can’t figure this out, you aren’t worth the one extra dog you have, please give it away.
