Security is a privilege, not a mandate. Nixon dropped his in 1985.
Becoming a fugitive from justice would count as voluntarily giving up lots of privileges, the very least of which would be a publicly funded security detail.

You want to feel really old?
It’s real:

Derrick Anderson, who is running for an open seat in Virginia’s Seventh District, in a photo with the wife and children of a longtime friend.
Unhinged entry level employee screaming and swearing and threatening the CFO and spit in her coffee mug.
An email went out to the whole company telling us not to let him in the building before he even got back to his desk to be fired. This is a software company, not exactly the type of place that has armed guards, but the (ex-military) information security dude set up in the area packing for a few weeks after that.
I keep wanting to think I’m an RPG kind of gamer, but in reality, all my favorites were from the SNES.

Nintendo patents video game inventory system.
Not the onion.
(Not a patent lawyer, and I’m sure it’s more complicated than that, but come on)
The idea is that it gives moderate republicans a path to voting for her.
Without the endorsements, they would feel like they’re betraying their principles and their party to vote D. With them, they can make a choice: Lots of rank and file voters will stick with Trump, but if a few party leaders, recently respected within the party, can vote for Harris, maybe that isn’t such a betrayal after all.
Will it change the vote by 5-10%? Basically zero chance of that. But if it swings a few thousand voters in some strategic areas, it can make a difference. It’s not a strategy aimed at very many people, but those votes on the margins matter.
Sounds like just the publishing side was affected. Lots of other independent developers are kind of in limbo in the short term, which does suck.
Hopefully they can get out of any contracts and go to a publisher not associated with that family.
If the race were between The Literal Devil ® and Jesus Christ (D), the vote total would be 45%-55% just based on the letter they choose to run after their name.
Policy doesn’t matter when people base their entire personality on their political party identification.
They do point out that they will be monitoring how it’s used, and could adjust things later.
Sounds like corporate-speak for “if people abuse this, we’ll lock it down harder.”
Even if people are using it to share with actual family around the country, they may get caught up in future updates that remove that feature. Also note that any publisher can opt out of the sharing. If EA or Ubi or some other big company doesn’t like the lack of limits, they may be able to force Valve’s hand in changing the policy.
The idea is wonderful, but there are a ton sof ways this could end up worse than the old system.
There are things I disagree with Harris about, but this cycle, I’m a single issue voter.
That issue is “never having to experience Trump in any office ever again.”
Hopefully my politics can be a little more nuanced next time.
The thing is, there will come a day when only bots will be able to get these right. The only way into a site will be to answer incorrectly, to prove you’re human.
“Well pay you millions of dollars to keep doing your work.”
Ok, but I’m not changing my message, I’m no sellout.
“No worries, it’s perfect as is.”
That’s not a victim, that’s a perpetrator. Whether they knew who was bankrolling the operation or not (they probably did), the fact that their message aligned perfectly with opponents of their country is enough.
Gameboy Advance had single-pak link (buy one copy, play with up to 4 linked devices) 20 years ago.
Greed has defeated the technology, though.
How dare my meddling not work out, you’re all fired!
In a world where every person is free to share their opinion directly to a mass audience, *we need trusted experts in various fields more than ever.
No, they’re not necessarily going to be concentrated only in traditional media, but if I’m looking something up real quick, I’m more likely to trust some random author on a real news site than some random author on social media. Maybe I’d still get wrong information sometimes, but the odds are better.
In this analogy, when you add a new book, only then is that “deleted” book actually removed and replaced with the new one. Until then, it just sits there waiting, but since nothing is pointing to it, it’s hard to find.
When someone recovers a file, what they’re doing is going book by book and reconciling the index to see if there’s anything missing. Since this book still exists, it can be recovered.
If we’re gaming the whole scenario out, I imagine it would go something like this.
None of his current convictions are expected to come with a custodial sentence, but say he loses the election, and the more serious trials are heating up. At that point, he knows he’s toast. 2028 is too late to run a fourth time; he’s got no more hail marys, so he dismisses his detail completely, retreats to Florida, and sneaks away to Saudi Arabia in the middle of the night.
He’s got a private jet, so getting out of the country shouldn’t be a huge problem. But I think you’re right that he has to set all this in motion before a guilty verdict is delivered. At that point, getting away from the secret service would be much more difficult.
