  • He might be a lunatic but their economy has been tanked for a long time. They really didn’t have much to lose by giving him a shot. Businesses need to thrive in order to pay for the social safety net that Argentina wants so they need to get the balance right. Inflation was 300% in April and they say they expect it to be down to 122% by the end of the year. It’s a terrible situation they are in. Him being elected wasn’t because he gaslighted people into thinking an improving was bad so he can’t be directly compared to Trump or people like Nigel Farage.

  • To me this falls more under the category of non profit independent news, primarily local news where all the corruption happens. Report for America, reportforamerica.org, assists these local newsrooms and has a spot on their site that you can search for sites local to you. These local papers are interesting because their individual sponsors are often influential people in your community who believe in democracy and are concerned about the power of corporate media. I just checked out our local online paper like this and see the same names that I recognize for people I know who support the arts.

  • You’re missing my point. I’m talking about his personal relationship with his religion, not how he might impose it on others, including her. I assume he loves her and if he is serious he ought to be terrified about her salvation. But I don’t think that’s the case. I think he is not serious about his religion nor the other strong stances he appears to take. The issue of the salvation of his wife should be his most serious concern and if he can wave that away it just proves that he doesn’t mean anything he says. My biggest problem with Trump is that is a deeply immoral man without values to guide him. Vance was supposed to shore up the support of the right but he’s just as rudderless.

  • Good point. “Thanks for coming, we’d be happy to serve you, but we do not allow recording video in our store.”

That said he is pretty awkward ordering the donuts. He asked for whatever makes sense instead of asking for a recommendation.

My take on JD Vance is that he’s a talented guy who figured out that if he can transform into this right wing guy then he can have a career. Being a conservative catholic is part of that mask. The biggest tell to me is the timing of his conversion and the fact that his wife is Hindu. If he takes his Christianity as seriously as he claims, then his top priority should be to convert his wife, not respect her choice to do her own thing.

  • He’s saying that “pioneers take the arrows, and the settlers take the land”.

Haiku makes him feel like a pioneer again, and it sounds like the tinkering is fun.

Based on your comment, it is highly unlikely that you would have used Linux desktop in the late 90s for the same reason you wouldn’t use Haiku today. A lot of people feel out on computers, if it was just about doing work then the vintage computer hobbyists would all find something else to do.
