Summary

Senate Democrats are resisting a Republican-backed funding bill that excludes limits on Trump and Elon Musk’s federal workforce cuts, fearing further agency dismantling.

With a government shutdown looming, Democrats propose a 30-day stopgap measure, though it’s unlikely to pass in the GOP-controlled Congress.

Republicans, holding a 53-47 Senate majority but lacking the support needed to reach the 60-vote threshold, predict Democrats will cave to avoid blame for a shutdown. Progressives urge defiance, while Treasury Secretary Scott Brown warns Democrats will “own” the shutdown.

A Friday vote will determine the outcome.

The Republicans have a once per year “Trump” card called budget reconciliation that only takes 51 senate votes. Right now the republican senators are worried about deficits and whatnot, otherwise they would have already used it. If the CR is filibustered, the government will shutdown until 51 republican senators can get their act together and pass the reconciliation without democratic support.

It will very much look like democrats shutdown the government and republicans alone opened it back up. Best to grow a backbone after the once per year thing is used up and they don’t have the option of just ignoring you.
