Canadian writer Mark Steyn later referenced Simberg’s article in his own piece in National Review, where he referred to Mann as “the man behind the fraudulent climate-change ‘hockey-stick’ graph, the very ringmaster of the tree-ring circus.”
The jury in Superior Court of the District of Columbia found that Simberg and Steyn made false statements, awarding Mann $1 in compensatory damages from each writer.
It awarded punitive damages of $1,000 from Simberg and $1 million from Steyn, after finding that the pair made their statements with “maliciousness, spite, ill will, vengeance or deliberate intent to harm.”

The amount of abuse he has put up with is astounding. All for promoting his research and advocating for action to avert catastrophe. I honestly do no know how he maintains his patience or motivation in the face of it all.
I got to meet Dr Mann in 2012 at a small speaking engagement he did promoting his book “The Climate Wars”. He was incredibly friendly and penned a note to my children encouraging them to get into science. A year or so later I emailed him an anecdote about me explaining climate change and climate denial to my then 7yr old daughter. “Those people are crazy” were her exact words. I never really expected him read it let alone respond but he did. No real point to this story other than to relay that he is a real and sincere person who does not deserve the hate he gets from the crazies.
